I received the above certificate after completing a course in Professional Learning Communities at St Thomas University and then presenting a workshop on PLCs along with nine of my classmates. I believe that PLCs, when used properly, can do wonderful things for schools. PLCs focus on what is being learned rather than on what is being taught. To read more about my views on PLCs and common assessments, please go to the PDF document in my Assessment Philosophy.
I believe that technology can be a wonderful tool in the classroom and so I chose to include this certificate in my portfolio. While I am certainly not a technological genius, I am proficient in many classroom technologies including Smart Boards, one-to-one netbook programs, document cameras, wikis, and digital stories. During my time at Nashwaaksis Middle School I worked with students who were part of the one-to-one laptop program, which added unique challenges and advantages to the classroom. For more on the subject, go to professional readings and look at the article by Katie Ash.
I have successfully completed an online course on Project-Based Learning. I believe that PBL is a wonderful addition to the classroom as it makes learning more meaningful for students by introducing them to real-world scenarios to which they can apply what they have been learning in class. PBL also allows for multiple chances to use both formative and summative assessments.
